The Jazz Singer was a braodway smash in 1925 & 27. When Warner Brothers bought the rights to make it into a movie, they wanted the broadway star to recreate his role.

But George Jessel wanted too much money and so they used Jolson instead.

Jolson was called The World's Greatest Entertainer...wow...nothing I can add to that.

The Jazz Singer was also offered to Eddie Cantor.

Jazz Singer was not the first talkie, but the two earlier efforts were shorts with no dialog, just music and sound effects.
